Maribel goes to Captiva

This is my very most favorite place to visit, Captiva Island, Florida. Legend has it that the barrier islands were a haven for infamous pirates. “The Buccaneer Coast” attracted the notorious Jose Gaspar to the region in the early 1800s, where it was rumored that he buried his stolen treasure on Sanibel, and then built a prison on “Isle de los Captivas,” or Captiva Island, where he kept his female prisoners “captive” for ransom. Gaspar himself was captured in 1821 by the U.S. Navy, but wrapped himself in chains and jumped overboard off his ship, rather then face imprisonment.

Well, that's what happened to Gaspar, this is what happened to his pet squirrel, Maribel.

Do you like her gold teeth?
Visit The Ribboned Crown for a list of other attendees.

You're a crazy old wench, now aren't ye?! And does PETA know what the likes of yer kind has been doin' to the tiny furry inhabitants of the isle? They'll have ye walk the plank they will, or worse make ye watch the weather channel for a week! Now don't just sit there readin'... come see me on The Lady of The Sea, and we'll take the old tub for a spin around the cove...

p.s. Looks like 'last minute' agrees with you...

Uh oh, poor poor pet squirrel. But that Buccaneer Coast sure looks enchanting, Gasper sounds like a brave old pirate to me. Karen

Poor Maribel. Actually, I'm enamored with her troll hair.

I bet if Maribel knew of her fate ahead of time she would have buried some chains for herself instead of nuts!! No chains neccessary on our voyage- just comic relief and you've got that covered!!

Never thought of using glitter that way before... and I don't think I will again. Enjoy the Soiree! Off to set sail again.

I wouldn't mind being held captive on Captiva. Do the squirrels there save coconuts? Perhaps that is why Maribel has gold teeth.

Love it! Had no idea of the history of Captiva Island. (Why would I, never having been there - woe is me.)

I think I'll go check on my monkey... he seems to have wandered off. Wouldn't want him to suffer the same fate as Maribel!

Your post took the prise for my funny bone. It is peculiarly one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I shall have to visit you from time-to-time just to see more of your interesting mind. Marabel will be a name marked in my brain as a humor trigger.

Maybe this is why Robert Rauschenberg settled and died on Captiva. It would offer much in the way of creative fodder. Thanks for enlightening me.
