Me and My Dad

This is my dad and me and my dog, Caledonia. He passed away four months ago. Everyone in my family is hoping that I'm feeling better because I know they hate to see me so sad. But I don't, believe me I am trying. In spite of the fact that we had our ups and downs, I loved him and being his only child I know that he loved me too. We were really good friends and did a lot of things together, we rode horses, trained bird dogs, fished, hunted, well a lot of guy stuff. Oh yeah, we embroidered together once. He wasn't perfect, no one is, but I loved him and I miss him. He carried this picture in his wallet. It said, "This is my favorite," on the back.

What a beautiful snap shot. I want you to feel better, too, but I understand it will just take time. The grief will come over you in huge waves, just when you think you've begun to turn a corner. It will probably be years before either of us don't think of and miss our dads every single day, no matter how rocky our relationships with them were, especially having been with them in those last terrible moments. I'm glad you have so many good memories of him to treasure, and I know your father loved you, even if it was hard for him to show it. With adulthood and our own parenthood comes the ability to see our parents for what they really are, flaws and all, instead of the heroes we imagine they should be when we are young. Parents are human. They sometimes make bad, selfish decisions and mistakes, and usually, in the end, it's they who suffer for it, even more than the hurting children they leave behind. All we can do is take the mistakes of our parents, and their parents, and do our best not to repeat them with our own precious babies. I'm thinking of you and sending good wishes your way. Take care of yourself and know it's okay to take time to grieve, as long as life goes on through the sadness. My email checks are few and far between these days, as we are without internet access at home right now, but know that someone who understands what you're going through is just an email away if you need to vent, my friend.
Love,
Holly
